EWCE working on behalf of United Utilities have removed the 50,000 tonne earth dam at Baystone Bank reservoir, near Millom, restoring the previously-submerged Whicham Valley to its former glory.

The eight-month operation has been a huge environmental feat, involving wildlife experts, geomorphologists and civil engineers.

"This huge structure was built using earth and clay excavated from the Whicham Valley. There were no records to tell us what the original valley looked like. All we had to go on was the original ordnance survey map of 1867, which showed us where the original river flowed," said project manager Carl Sanders.
