This innovative project comprises the construction of a new two form entry primary school at Baron Road, to include a range of teaching and educational facilities, plus an on-site nursery and external sports areas. The school, which was completed six weeks ahead of programme, is built on a brownfield site close to the town's football stadium. It caters for up to 420 pupils and 60 staff.
The facility has been designed as both a creative learning environment and a community hub. The curved building is elliptically shaped and was inspired by its close proximity to the coast. It has a two storey pitched roof that slopes in one direction and contains a central, double height atrium which provides a light and airy space.
The design allows for multi-use classrooms, with folding screens enabling learning environments to be linked together as required. The school also provides community spaces including a hall, drama studio, football pitches and amphitheatre.
A collaborative approach has seen pupils and staff involved from the outset, creating design ideas, choosing colour schemes and selecting the name - Blackpool Gateway Academy. The development results in a modern, flexible space that will provide opportunities for excellent teaching and learning for many years to come.
