Windy Railway Bridge carries the A646 Burnley Road, near Cornholme over the Burnley Branch line. The land surrounding the structure is agricultural and there were private accesses to the north east and south west of the structure which had to be passable at all times.

The works comprise the installation of a vehicle containment system seated on a new reinforced concrete slab/footings inboard of the existing masonry parapets. The carriageway was resurfaced for a length of approximately 180m and permanent traffic signals were installed to control alternate one way working across the bridge. The masonry elevations, arch intrados and abutments were pointed which required railway possessions issued by Network Rail.. The scheme also included small elements of drainage, safety fencing on the approaches and the provision of street lighting.
